So your Vizio TV remote is not working and you are looking for a solution? Don't panic, this is a common problem. Fortunately, there are several proven solutions you can try to get your remote working again.
The remote control of the Vizio TV does not work
If your Vizio TV remote doesn't work, remove the back cover, remove the batteries, and then press and hold the power button on the remote for 30 seconds. Then press all the buttons and tap the remote on your palm several times. Try a new set of batteries.
You may need to repeat the above process several times.
If the above solution doesn't work, there are a few other options you should definitely try before purchasing a replacement.
I'll walk you through some basic troubleshooting steps that can help you isolate the problem.
Remove the batteries, press and hold the power button on the remote control
Push down the Vizio TV remote and remove the batteries.Hold down the power button on the remote and press it several times.
The reason you need to press the power button on the remote control is to discharge the remaining power.
Even if the batteries are removed from the remote, it may still store some electricity in its capacitors and will not fully reset unless you discharge the remote.
Press and hold the power button while discharging the electricity stored in the capacitor of the remote control. Although it seems like a simple step, it is very important and many people overlook it.
This simple reset will most likely fix your remote.
Check if the remote control's IR sensor is working
Your remote and TV use oneinfrared rayfor sending and receiving signals.
If this beam is not working properly on your remote control, this could be the direct cause of a non-working remote control.
One of the easiest ways to check if the IC on your remote is working is through the remotewith your phone's camera:
- Open the camera app on your phone and look at the remote control on the screen.
- Press any button or set of buttons on the remote control.
- A working remote flashes a red light through the camera screen each time the button is pressed.
- If you don't see a red light, the remote may be faulty or the batteries are dead.
Replace the batteries
While this sounds incredibly obvious, your remote's batteries may be old and need to be replaced.Putting a new set of batteries in the remote could very well solve your problem.
You'd be surprised how often this is the source of the problem!
And worst case scenario, if the remote still doesn't work with fresh batteries, at least you now know the batteries weren't the problem.
Remove obstacles that may block IR signals
Blockages between the remote control and the TV are another common problem.
Since your remote uses infrared and your TV has an IR sensor, they should be able to send and receive that beam unimpeded.
Obstacles can be walls, other electronic signals including Bluetooth, and large objects such as furniture or speakers.
If you notice a blockage between the Vizio remote and the TV, try moving to a different location or aiming the remote directly at the TV's sensor.
Sometimes the problem can be as simple as moving around the house or moving a decorative piece of furniture.
Break all the buttons on the remote control
It may seem a little weird at first, but if you press all the buttons on the Vizio remote, it can work again.
The button on the remote often gets stuck. If one or more buttons on your remote are stuck, the other buttons will not work. It's like holding down multiple keys on the keyboard and it stops responding to keystrokes.
There are many different ways a remote control button can get stuck. Maybe it fell into the gap between the couch cushions and some dirt got under the tire. Anyway, it's a fairly common problem and it's easy to fix.
If you press all the buttons and hit the palm of the remote several times, the buttons, while primitive, can pop out again.
Button it up and tap the back to make the dirt fall out. Don't worry, Vizio TV remotes are very durable.
Turn off and on your Vizio TV
In some cases,A problem with the software on your TV can cause a communication problem between the TV and the remote control. If so, turning your Vizio TV off and back on will likely fix the problem.
To turn your Vizio TV off and on again,Unplug the power adapter and wait a FULL 60 seconds.
While waiting, press and hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds.Make sure you hold downButton to turn on the TVand not remotely! (Position of the power buttonit's probably on the back right of the TV).
This will rid the TV of any residual power that has accumulated in the capacitors.
Turn the TV back on after a minute.Wait for the TV to start up (this will take a little longer than usual) and test the remote.
In many cases, restarting the TV using this method can also fix remote control issues. It also helps to keep your TV running smoothly.
The next most likely problem is that some liquid got into the remote and damaged the button circuits.Liquid damage is quite common and is often the reason why certain buttons on the remote don't work.
If liquid gets into your remote, it may leave a residue that may prevent the rubber buttons from making full contact with the circuit pads.
If you have to press the key hard for it to register, liquid damage is likely to blame. Soft drinks can leave a sticky residue that can cause a variety of problems.
From here you can try a quick DIY solution and take the remote apart to clean the internal components. If you are not satisfied with this, I recommend that you search the Internet for the model of your Vizio remote and purchase a replacement remote.
But if you're curious and want to tackle a new project, let's move on. I mean, what could possibly happen worse? The remote control does not work!
Open the remote control
It's an ideaOpen the remote control case and clean the rubber buttons, circuit board and plastic panels to remove any liquid residue. It's a fairly simple project and most Vizio remotes don't have screws.
To begin with, we need to open the Vizio remote.Be sure to remove the batteries and then press the power button several times to discharge the remote.
Hold the remote sideways and insert a flathead screwdriver into the gap between the edges near the center OK button. You may have to squirm a bit.
Use another screwdriver to enlarge the opening, turn the screwdriver and you will hear the part come loose. Push the screwdriver deeper into the housing and pull out each of the sections.
Clean the components
Once the panel is detached you will find the rubber button panel and circuit board inside. Feel free to remove these parts and inspect them for signs of liquid damage.
You will likely find hair, stains, or other debris inside.Inspect every part, including the plastic plate, and make sure they are clean. The back of the rubber button is the most important.
Use 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove any residual liquid. You can rub the residue off with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol or just let everything soak.99% isopropyl alcohol won't damage the board, at least not when it's completely dry.
Now look at the circuit board, it has pads to match the rubber button pad.
If one of the buttons on your Vizio remote isn't responding, align the rubber keypad side-by-side with the logic board and find the pad that corresponds to the button that isn't responding.
Check the substrates on the PCB
There is a high probability that the substrate on the PCB is slightly congested or has areas of liquid damage.Use rubbing alcohol to remove stains from the circle.
Another cool trick is to use a pencil and draw along the lines of the PCB traces. The reason isThe graphite in the pen improves conductivity, making it easier for the pad to sense pressure.
Once you're sure everything is clean, it's time to put everything back together. The board is first inserted into the plastic back panel and the rubber keyboard is located on the top panel. Make sure they are securely fastened in their shelves.
Place the two panels together and press them together, making sure they click together. Replace the batteries and test the Vizio remote.
Hopefully, after all this hassle, the Vizio remote will work again. If it still doesn't work after all these solutions, the last resort is to buy a replacement.
Vizio remotes aren't expensive, but waiting for them to ship without being able to use your Vizio TV can be inconvenient.
Here are the best solutions for your Vizio remote if it's not working:
- Remove the batteries from the Vizio TV remote and press the power button several times
- Check if the IR sensor of the Vizio remote is working
- Remove any obstacles that may block IR signals between your Vizio TV and the remote control
- Press all the buttons on the Vizio TV remote and tap your palm several times
- Try a new pair of fully charged batteries
- Reset the TV by unplugging it, waiting 30 seconds and plugging it back in
- Disassemble the Vizio remote and use 99% isopropyl alcohol to remove any liquid residue from the logic board and rubber keyboard
When all else fails, it's time to buy a replacement.
